Goa – Resort Heaven or Cultural Delight?
Aside from its long and fascinating colonial history, Goa was 'discovered' in the 1960s and 1970s by Western hippies looking for something different to the usual holiday destination, and as a stop on their travels around India. It quickly gained a reputation as an ideal package destination, which continues to this day - if you prefer to take your holidays all inclusive, without the worry of organising too much, but want to try somewhere unique, then Goa is the place for you.
The main resort area is in Candolim, to where many British package deals will lead you, although for the younger, less family oriented and more party focused market, Baga is your place. This is situated at one end of the stunning Calangute Beach, a 7-mile strip of palm fringed sands which is just as popular with locals as it is with holidaymakers. In Baga there are all the holiday amenities you would expect, such as bars, discos and of course this being India, the enviable cuisine available pretty much whenever you want it. The focus of your day would most definitely be lazing on the beach, under a palm tree - very relaxing. Colva Beach is where most top resorts are and have a good reputation.
Other types of resort cater for the more 'alternative' and hippy-style traveller, and many people do head on cheap flights to Goa in order to take part. Goa is definitely a place to discover your inner self if you want to, with Anjuna and Arambol your destinations for a relaxing holiday complete with tai-chi and Eastern philosophy lessons.
For those wanting to do a little exploring on their holidays, the history of Goa is your lead point, and in tune with its general air of self contemplation and reflection, you would do well to explore local historical attractions. The Portuguese held Goa for 451 years from 1510, founding it as a vital link in their colonial trade routes. Their main legacy was in the Catholic churches which still stand, as well as a strong influence on the people and language. Many of the local shops and businesses still have Portuguese names, and a dwindling number still speak the language. One of the best churches to visit is that of St Francis of Assisi, built in 1661 on the site of an earlier ecclesiastical building. Another is the Baroque church of Bom Jesus, which houses most of St Francis Xavier's relics (the others being dispersed to Japan, Rome and across the Catholic world). Naturally, there also some magnificent Hindu temples to behold in the Ponda area of Old Goa, the most imposing being that of Shri Shantadurga. Many date from the 18th century and are well preserved.
In addition to the religious and contemplative side to Goa, there are plenty of other historic buildings to see, such as in the old colonial district of Fontainhas with its leafy squares and a real European feel to it. Why not take coffee in one of the traditional cafes overlooking the park?
There is something for everyone in Goa, much more than can be described in a few words, and in taking one of the many cheap Flights on offer to India you will most definitely feel your money has been well spent.
